Living in Tallahassee has a lot of perks!

Another initiative in the Tallahassee Museum’s “We’re In It Together” initiative has been announced, and it’s a deal that will benefit everyone living in Tallahassee. For the month of September, the Tallahassee Museum is offering $2 admission each Saturday this month.

Head out to the Tallahassee Museum this weekend to see all of the exhibits, nature trails, and historic buildings for only $2. The museum will also have people re-enacting blacksmithing and other trades from historic times. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the history of the city and support local business.

“We’re In It Together” is a non-profit program that has been providing free admission to the museum for families of workers laid off during this economic recession. Others have been offered significant discounts in order to experience the history and magic of the Tallahassee Museum.

The Tallahassee Museum is open from 9AM to 5PM Saturdays, so you have all day to make your trip over to the museum. What do you want to see first?

For some, the beginning of September marks the end of summer vacation, and they find themselves in a somber mood. These people must not live in Tallahassee!

football-season

Who will you be cheering on this football season?

This Saturday marks the beginning of college football season for the 2010-2011 year. Across the nation fans will be cheering for their alma maters, and you can bet Florida State fans will be getting in the spirit of celebration. The ‘Noles will be taking on the Samford Bulldogs at Noon 9/4. If you can’t get tickets, the game will be airing on ESPNU.

FAMU begins their season tonight in Miami playing the University of Miami. They won’t have a home game for some time, but we can all look forward to the Atlanta Classic happening September 25th!

Happy college football season, everyone!

movie-star

Watch a Tallahassee native become a movie star!

Tallahassee is known for great colleges and universities, attractions, and events, but one thing you don’t hear a lot about here in the capital city of Florida is a lot of celebrities coming out of here. That is…until now.

A FAMU alum recently starred in a commercial promoting the new film, “Takers” and it has now put him on the map. FAMU Alumnus Montrel Miller received his degree in Business Economics, but realized while in school that acting is his true calling.

Though Miller has gotten a little taste of fame with this hilarious commercial, he isn’t finished with his quest to become an actor just yet. Miller has lined up a role in “Stomp the Yard 2: The Homecoming.”

The commercial airs on Cartoon Network during the Adult Swim hours. These programs air from 10PM to 6AM. Support a Tallahassee native and watch him rise to stardom!

When I was little, my parents pushed me to be a dancer. I always thought it was just to get me into one of those adorable tutus, but I see now that they were only trying to expose me more to the arts, to get a little culture. Ballet and all dance is such a beautiful art, and I see that now years later. Whenever you get the chance to attend a show you should absolutely take that opportunity, and The Tallahassee Ballet may just be that chance for you.

ballet

See The Tallahassee Ballet perform this fall.

The fall season for The Tallahassee Ballet has been announced, and starting in September the season will commence. Wow, the summer season has really flown by! The shows announced for the season are ballet classics, shows that any person, whether dance fanatic or not, would be familiar with. Later in the year, you will be able attend the legendary show, “The Nutcracker,” and “Cinderella.”

For now, audiences in Tallahassee can make their way over to Opperman Music Hall at FSU for, “From Bach to Broadway.” It will be an evening filled with an eclectic mix of music. You’ll get the classical, you’ll get the contemporary, all while accompanied with the talent from the Tallahassee Ballet dancers.

Will you be making your way out for the fall season of shows? Season tickets are currently on sale. Get your tickets and add this to the list of reasons you love the fall season!

Why are You Ready for Fall?

With school starting back up, it’s a reminder to us all that the fall season is fast approaching. Rather than get upset that summer will be coming to a close, we should think of the reasons we are excited for the next season to come around. So, with that we’ve put a new poll up on the blog! The question is simple:

Whatever it is that you love most about autumn, make sure you let us know by voting on the poll. We want to know what you think!

vintage

Get great vintage finds in Tallahassee.

One of my favorite things to do is scour local antique shops and vintage boutiques for that special touch in décor that my apartment needs. There are so many little treasures hidden throughout every city, and Tallahassee is no exception. If you want to make some vintage finds of your own, head over to The Other Vintage.

Brooklyn and Zan work hard to bring Tallahassee some of the best vintage and retro finds available to anyone out there. The new The Other Vintage location in Railroad Square has even more space for the retail space to show off their retro furniture, vintage clothing and accessories for men & women, and a lot more!

Aside from getting making a purchase because you’ve made the find of a lifetime, it’s always a great idea to scour local shops. Buying locally stimulates the Tallahassee economy and helps support local business. You love where you live, so help make it a better place by buying locally!

Where do you get your vintage and retro finds?

Tallahassee, the capital city of Florida, is such a great place to dine out thanks to the myriad options available here. Though Delaney Park residents are lucky enough to have so many restaurant and food choices around town, this can also make the decision of exactly what and where to eat somewhat difficult and time-consuming.

Rather than traipsing about town trying to find something to whet your appetite, you should let the good people of Tallahassee do it for you. There are several reviews of restaurants all about town – you just have to know where to look for them. Here are 3 great ways to find what you want to eat in Tallahassee:

tallahassee-food

Get the best food Tally has to offer.

  • Scour the foodie blogs of Tallahassee. It’s really easy to find them, too. Simply enter a search query like “Tallahassee food” on Google for blogs, and you’ll be happy to see the search results are plentiful. One of the best ones I’ve recently discovered is Tally Foodie. The blogger recently retired postings, but there are a ton to read through about great restaurants all over Tallahassee.
  • Way more specific and to the foodie point than yelp! is Urbanspoon. The site has a page dedicated solely to Tallahassee food offerings in every possibly category you could fathom. You can even save yourself a little more time by browsing through the “Talk of the Town,” a selection of the most popularly talked about restaurants in Tallahassee right now.
  • Who better to ask than your neighbors? Residents and the staff here at Delaney Park always have great suggestions on Facebook, and you know you can always stay tuned to the blog for the best dining Tally has to offer.
farmers-market

Visit a local farmers' market in Tallahassee!

This week is National Farmers’ Market Week, and living in Tallahassee makes celebrating this holiday really easy! The capitol city has a handful of amazing farmers’ markets right around town – make sure you stop by one or two to celebrate this week and get some great local goods.

Support your local community! The Tallahassee Farmers’ Market is open throughout the year on Saturdays from 7 Am to noon. This gives you just enough time to gather all the produce you like, and try out a new recipe for lunch at home. If you like it, make sure to share your knowledge (and food!) with your Delaney Park neighbors!

A lesser known, but fantastic farmers’ market also in Tallahassee is Ali’s Strawberry Shakes and Farmers’ Market. Located on Crump Road, Ali’s offers great produce, seafood, and milkshakes of course! Your fellow Tallahassee residents have good things to say in their reviews of Ali’s Strawberry Shakes and Farmers’ Market. Make sure to check it out for yourself!

I have been in my apartment just short of six months, and I have yet to purchase what many consider apartment living necessities. Some of the items I’ve avoided buying include a vacuum, a step stool for those hard-to-reach things, and anything for dusting – it’s my least favorite cleaning task, I try to avoid it as much as possible! Rather than go out to the store to once and for all make these purchases, I’m going to recruit NeighborGoods to help me borrow these items on the occasion I need them.

NeighborGoods is a community of people looking to borrow goods from one another when needed. The whole concept is actually really simple!

Start your search and find stuff you need. You can even recruit your Delaney Park at Southwood neighbors to join NeighborGoods!
